Farming is more exciting than it’s ever been. It’s also more complex, and disarmingly competitive.
Whether you grow grain, orchards and berries, market gardens, or maybe ranch and everything else in between, it is undeniable that farming is going through radical change.
Social docs like KISS the GROUND and COMMON GROUND resonate deeply. All forms of alternative agriculture like organic, permaculture, and even IMTA now benefit from the increased visibility of regen-ag and loveable earth-icons like Gabe Brown.
As importantly, and even more so in some respects, large conventional factory farms are experimenting with regenerative methods to reduce chemical fertilizer costs.
For farmers, this experimentation clearly answers; WHAT’S IN IT FOR ME?
Reduced operating costs and increased profit have the attention of conventional factory farmers. On another level though, where money is tighter, the “MOVEMENT” is not delivering for INDEPENDENT FARMERS who have practiced Alt-AG methods like organic, permaculture and regenerative agriculture for many years, some for decades. For many INDIE FARMERS unfortunately, the Alt-AG movement stalled long ago.
Propaganda coming from FACTORY FARMS today raises regen visibility for everyone, but it is misleading and comes with a steep price and caveat.
Alt-AG Indie Farmers do have opportunities, but it won’t land in your laps. If you want customers, you’d do well to consider what a handful of American farmers have already accomplished. As I mentioned, a few Canadian farms are also experimenting and doing well, but our market is smaller and our governments are now distracted with tariffs, so it’s easier to follow American success stories until the emerging market has more stability.
Most farmers will HUNKER-DOWN SCARED and wait it out. *Some though, will want to LEVERAGE TODAY’S CHAOS and ENERGY.

There are a number of advanced Alt-AG organizations to also help farmers who are interested in evolving. Regeneration Canada from Montreal is one of note, and so is Farm Folk City Folk from BC, but we need more associations of this caliber to help cultivate customers. Without customers, there is no revenue.
Some organisations want to completely REPLACE ORGANIC with REGNERATIVE, and are building aggressively in this direction.
Organics came to the party late and is now scrambling to restructure and prepare defense strategies to reclaim ground lost to misleading messages.
The PIONEER FARMERS, who invested in different alternative agriculture forms for years, some for decades, are frustrated after carrying the weight for so long, and are now asking;
WHERE ARE ALL THE CUSTOMERS?
The unfortunate reality is that the movement failed catastrophically to generate enough sales volume to make alternative agriculture prices affordable for most retail food customers. Food grown using Alt-AG processes now attracts mostly affluent consumers, the only group who can afford the luxury prices.
Movements need to be balanced, and organized, and adhere to standards. They need some form of centralized facilitation.
Alt-AG also has way too many competing certification ideologies. Fisheries went through similar chaotic battles twenty years ago before they consolidated efforts.
Ironically… tariffs, have given farmers all the WILL they and governments need to develop and invest in SHORT FOOD CHAINS and LOCAL FARMING COMMUNITIES.
Indie Alt-AG farmers are discovering however that today’s chaos is more challenging than they can manage. Consequently, many farmers freeze out of frustration, and do nothing.
When their online CSA Store doesn’t generate as much revenue as they hope, they erroneousely blame it on the software. Market garden farming however, is highly competitive. When you don’t stand out, you’re invisible and your brand gets lost in the crowd.

Although Trump’s Tariffs are sputtering and might never hit as hard as Washington hopes, they’re already causing farmers pain.
The GOOD NEWS; If you approach the challenge with a LOCAL COMMUNITY MINDSET it can place you in a position to generate more revenue than you might imagine.
Forward-thinking Alt-AG farmers in America already generate considerable revenue selling PREMIUM PRODUCTS. They recognized early that they had to CONNECT FACE-TO-FACE WITH CUSTOMERS and not put false hope into SOCIAL MEDIA ECHO CHAMBERS and a MOVEMENT that is not performing.
Smart farmers moved quickly after the PERMACULTURE PRICE PYRAMID FLIPPED

Fortunately… there are also forward-thinking farmers, grocers, and restaurants like Impact Kitchen that work hard to keep prices affordable. They do it in part by forming strong community alliances and partnerships to lower production costs.
WEALTHY BUYERS however, who recognize the health value in regenerative food, are capitalizing on the Alt-AG market.

We don’t recommend that farmers expend too much energy chasing customers on SOCIAL MEDIA. It has its place, but it’s mostly an ECHO CHAMBER of corporate and government HACKS who contract third parties to screw relentlessly with farmers’ heads. They call themselves “influencers”–tomato tomahto, but it’s really a covert form of REVERSE SOFT-LOBBYING that, btw, we teach farmers to also leverage.
Although Facebook can be an effective social media tool for some Indie Farmers, it doesn’t deliver results in the way most growers hope. Use it to build a customer list, but DON’T BE AN ADVERTISING PREDATOR …you’ll never shake the stigma.
Instead, learn how to use social media as a free tool so customers can find you organically–in a grassroots way.
