My Farmer is My Friend
All FARMERS have a STORY.
What’s Yours?
Small Farms <:> Large Farms
Farming Consortiums
Alternative Agriculture (Alt-AG) methods like organic, regenerative, permaculture, and other processes are under stress.
In part, it’s because their associated MOVEMENTS, designed to increase visibility and onboard FOOD CONSUMERS, began STALLING almost a decade ago and failed to meet mandates.
If you’ve invested in and promoted Alt-AG methods, but have not achieved the results expected, it’s more likely a FATAL FLAW of the MOVEMENT than it is of your efforts.
There are serious flaws in the permaculture and regenerative design that no one talks about or even acknowledges. If your strategy as a farmer does not compensate for these flaws, you’ll be on the losing side of the equation forever.
One flaw in particular about how NEW CUSTOMERS are brought into the community is financially devastating, but not the worst issue on the list. It’s hard to rate a flaw as being the worst, but another issue that has persisted for decades is the training qualification of the people who self-identify as EDUCATORS.
JUST BECAUSE YOU KNOW…
DOES NOT MEAN YOU CAN TEACH.
Alt-AG’s FLAWED REALITY is that QUALIFIED EDUCATORS in general are trained to impart knowledge in a way that gets the point across. If you’re not specifically trained to be a teacher, it’s irresponsible and arrogant to teach a subject as complex and important as farming.
New farmers are younger today, and considerably more advanced intellectually and technologically than scientists and engineers give them credit.
Have you ever played the TELEPHONE GAME where one person whispers an idea into the ear of the person on their left and is then asked to pass the message down the chain through several people? Go ahead, I dare you to try it with permaculture and regen information, and with people who don’t know the terms.
The EDUCATION FLAW has persisted since Alt-AG was launched. The “movement” has had RANK AMATUERS trying to pass on knowledge that scientists and engineers often claim is so complicated that sometimes even these documented geniuses, many who are on the spectrum, don’t fully understand.
I’ve tried to sit through permaculture and regenerative courses, but it was incredibly frustrating listening to someone with serious communication liabilities try to explain a complex issue. When a farmer invests $2,000 in an Alt-AG course, they expect to be taught by someone who fully understands the knowledge, and as importantly knows how to pass it on effectively.
We are at a critical node on the Alt-AG Adoption Curve where we need to do more than just certify the crops. If we want the industry to mature, we need to also certify that the people teaching Alt-AG, have been trained as communicators and educators. Most aren’t.
Growers and Farmers are frustrated because FOOD CONSUMERS, through no fault of their own, and who are also frustrated, are still not an active part of the Alt-AG community–see this Regenified report

The harsh reality is that for Alt-AG to succeed, the MOVEMENT… still needs to onboard millions and millions of new food buyers.
Overwhelming DATA indicates that regenerative and permaculture farmers struggle for sometimes a decade without financial profit, let alone generating enough revenue to thrive.
Many Alt-AG practitioners, whether Urban Gardeners or Rural Farmers feel like they’ve done their part, but that the MOVEMENT did not pull its weight, and it let them down.
Adoption Curves indicate that we are no closer to the MAINSTREAM TIPPING POINT than we were ten years ago.

Some Alt-AG practitioners however, already generate MA$$IVE PROFIT.
Unfortunately, they are rare, plus, most are NOT farmers. Similar to the 1800’s Gold Rush, the groups generating the most profit sell picks, shovels, and of course, knowledge/education, which is normal because it’s how movements evolve. However, the disconnect today occurs when farmers, who are doing all the heavy lifting, are left to fend for themselves.
Farmers do in fact have a choice, but it is up to you to leverage it to your benefit. There is no appreciable movement in the movement, so if you don’t develop a community that PLACES YOUR FARM at the centre of the economic equation, no one will.
Here’s another blip that should be on your radar: Regenerative agriculture and permaculture processes recently increased in visibility because large factory farming corporations realized that they can save money and improve profit margins by NOT using chemical fertilizers. Indie farmers don’t control this message, but they do benefit vicariously from the green-washing momentum. It’s free exposure that progressive Indie Farmers quickly leveraged.
Society also benefits when conventional farmers use less chemicals and grow more nutrient-dense food. It is important to realize however that large corporations have the government’s ear, and are already helping write Alt-AG legislation that Indie Farmers will be forced to follow–that’s you.
Alt-AG farmers, especially those who hide behind “A-Political” curtains, have zero input helping write legislation that will impact independent growers the most. It is naïve to think that large corporations will support independent Alt-AG operations that they regard as noxious weeds and competition. If you don’t help yourself, no one will, including the mostly mythical movement.
Independent farmers and growers did all the heavy lifting for several decades, and now their hard work is being co-opted.
If Indie Farmers don’t actively connect directly with consumers, food buyers will never know that Alt-AG produces natural food that takes ORGANIC to a whole new level.
Consumers will also not know that Alt-AG food can be easily affordable for everyone if the movement has enough followers. Plus, they won’t know that Alt-AG can deliver HEALTHY PREMIUM PRODUCTS that also help heal the earth.
Old school ORGANIC, can’t make that claim. The new REFINED ORGANIC can, but it arrived late because it underestimate regen visibility and is now scrambling to catch-up.
Alt-AG food grown using REGEN is clearly perceived to be better than organic because regen also helps heal the earth. In today’s sensitive market, healthy soil doesn’t only produce healthier nutrient dense food, it also affects CLIMATE and is now a critical differentiation for customers who will pay premium prices.
When Indie Farmers do it properly, and legally btw, they can grow and sell high grade organic regen food to consumers WITHOUT CERTIFICATION. Many do it quietly to avoid attention, but it’s evolving rapidly as discriminating customers get onboard.
Progressive indie farmers already promote Alt-AG at a very aggressive rate and generate considerable profit. According to a recent survey of over 600 farmers, WOMEN are often PROMOTIONAL POWERHOUSES because they are so GREAT at BUILDING COMMUNITY… but you already suspected that right? Now you know 🙂
