Canadian Alt-AG market farmers who use Organic, Permaculture, and Regenerative processes, et al, are getting excited thinking that Trump’s Tariffs will be “silver-lining” profitable because CANADIAN FOOD BUYERS WILL NOW ONLY BUY LOCAL…

Well, it’s kind of right, but farmers have to think it through.

Whether it’s organic, permaculture, regenerative, or traditional, local sales are not going to occur automatically, or be as easy as Canadian independent market farmers might hope.

To start, it’s already hyper-competitive for all farmers, especially wholesalers who will now need easy and affordable third-party support to manage the new sales model and communities. Farmers for the most part are bean growers, not counters, so a little tech help on the back end will go a long way to ensure that all the pieces of the puzzle come together smoothly and profitably.

Trump foolishly turned Canadians against Americans.

His tariffs are designed to CULL Canadian Farmers from the American market and are much more insidious than first thought.

Shoppers in Canada are already boycotting American produce, meat, and fish. Grocers replaced U.S. brands with our products, and also from Canada’s current and (soon) NEW trading partners around the globe. Even though Trump’s Tariffs have yet to be instituted, fresh American produce is already being pushed to the back of Canadian grocer shelves.

Canadians make friends everywhere eh, and it’s about to pay off as long as farmers can BLEND CSA and FARMERS’ MARKETS.

COMMUNITY SUPPORTED AGRICULTURE–CSA btw, is not as effective on its own as farmers might think. CSA lacks an EMOTIONAL CONNECTION necessary for food consumers in an EMERGING industry like Alt-AG. When combined with FARMERS MARKETS though, CSA is a GROCERY STORE KILLER.

Trump is bullying Canada and Mexico because he foolishly thinks it sends a message to China of what will befall the CCP if they don’t comply. It’s how most bullies test adversaries. I know from first-hand experience managing eastern seaboard projects with Trump in the 80’s, that it’s one of his go-to bluffs. We used to call him the sidewinder ’cause he was so sneaky.

It’s not politics to Trump. It’s about winning at all costs by first creating tension and then knowing when to release it to strike.

Communist China’s Xi Jinping however, is inscrutably baiting Trump. China – which now faces tariffs of 20% after Trump doubled an earlier levy – has vowed to fight any trade war to the “bitter end”. 

Everyone (except Trump it seems) knows exactly how long it will take America to build new infrastructure. For example, where does Trump think he’ll source high-grade aluminum and steel?

Canada’s exodus from America is already historical as we reach out to connect with markets where we are treated with respect.  

Here’s a billion dollar tip: It’s dangerous to think of Trump as a politician. He’s best known as a Boxing Promoter and hustler.

The curve-ball is that Trump’s Tariffs make Canadian farmers nervous because they know that if they CAN’T AFFORD to send their products to the U.S., Canada will have a temporary glut until we sign agreements with new buyers at home and around the globe–which could take a full season, but hopefully less.

Paradoxically, and advantageously for us, most of the world loves Canada as much as they now abhor America!  Sorry. Not sorry Eh!

Canadians made many sacrifices to earn global trust.

The other surprising reality for America is that Canadians live much longer than our unhealthy neighbors, and that the quality of food we produce, is better–way better. Proof, is in the pudding.

Canadians live three years longer than Americans.

According to the World Population Review, in 2022 Canada’s annual per capita SUGAR CONSUMPTION was 49.6kg / 109lb compared to America’s WHOPPING 66.47kg / 147lb. Americans can’t expect to get healthy again at the donut shop.

If it turns out that Canadian farmers can’t afford to, or patriotically refuse to sell their agriculture to U.S. Chefs, Home Cooks, and Wholesalers; Canadian AG will be diverted to our Food Banks filling them to overflow. We’ll also of course, PROCESS as much as our infrastructure will allow and convert the rest to animal feed or compost. PLUS, and this is critical… some overflow will be DUMPED ONTO CANADIAN GROCER SHELVES AT FIRE SALE PRICES.

Slashed prices mean industrial farmers will flood the Canadian market with AG that will be so cheap, most food consumers won’t be able to resist regardless of pesticide and herbicide contamination.

For example, if an average Canadian can buy fresh local apples at just fifty cents a pound, they’ll buy a bushel and soak them in water and baking soda, or peel them to remove most of the pesticide residue. Some too will simply crunch away with a sleeve wipe.

A glut will have considerable impact on Alt-AG permaculture and regenerative farmers unless they quickly pivot and learn how professional farm-marketers build and manage their business models. The right SaaS suite can answer a lot of operational questions for farmers and make admin and accounting easier.

Knowing how to source farm tech, and which admin software suite to choose and trust though, can be a major challenge. Do you patch a system together yourself, or invest in a proven software package?

It always depends on your budget and needs.

Once a farmer has the back-end in place though, the next critical decision is about knowing how to stand out in an oversaturated market. The reality is that farmers are in FRIENDLY COMMUNITY COMPETITION with each other, which means you have to pick your allies and partners carefully.

On a side note re the GLUT: With an overflow of fresh fruits and vegetables in the supply chain, Canadian manufacturers of wide-mouth GLASS PICKLING JARS and supplies, will also prosper. HINT: Look to third-party companies like this as partners.

Alt-AG Farmers are concerned too about what a FOOD GLUT will mean for growers who traditionally charge PREMIUM PRICES.

If managed properly, LOCAL SALES can also be great for this ELITE COMMUNITY, but if they’re not proactive, and fast, it’ll leave Alt-AG market garden farmers sucking the hind teat.

If LUXURY Alt-AG FARMERS miss the rush they’ll be nudged to the back of the line, even if they’ve been pioneers and long-standing leaders in the PREMIUM BUY LOCAL COMMUNITY.

Inevitably, we’ll all pay higher costs for everything, so the faster that farmers adopt and adapt, the better your odds of generating revenue and profit. Almost everything is changing, especially with younger farmers who are more tech-aware.

I wouldn’t get in that parade yet, but I strongly suggest that farmers at least prepare emotionally, because if it happens it’ll explode overnight.

Farmers will need an affordable, fast, and cost-effective way to EASILY CONNECT with your CUSTOMERS. That part hasn’t changed and is now more important than ever.

It’s not yet too late, but it might be by next month because it takes time to design and roll out an AFFORDABLE LOCAL PLAN.
